The Thermo Scientific (Nalgene) 3423-42 Biotainer Carboy is a robust 20 Liter (5 gallon) liquid storage vessel designed specifically for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. It is molded from crystal-clear, virgin polycarbonate (PC), which provides the durability and impact resistance of plastic with the optical clarity of glass, allowing for easy visual inspection of the contents without opening the container.

A defining feature of the Biotainer line is its readiness for critical applications. This unit is supplied sterile (gamma irradiated) and ready to use right out of the package, eliminating the need for cleaning or autoclaving validation. Its square shape is highly space-efficient, saving roughly 20% of shelf or freezer space compared to traditional round carboys.

The polycarbonate material makes this vessel exceptionally suitable for cold storage and freezing applications (down to -100°C). It is widely used for the bulk storage and transport of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), frozen bulk intermediates, and sensitive culture media. The container typically features a molded-in handle for safe transport and a 48mm neck that accepts standard closures, ensuring a secure seal for high-value liquids.
