The Thermo Scientific 167314 Microplate is a specialized version of the Nunc Edge 2.0 96-Well Plate, designed specifically to solve the common problem of evaporation during long-term cell culture incubation. The plate is constructed from clear polystyrene with a flat bottom and comes sterile with a lid.

The defining feature of this plate is the unique "Edge" technology, which incorporates a large perimeter reservoir (or moat) surrounding the 96 wells. In standard microplates, the outer wells often suffer from the "edge effect"—excessive evaporation that alters pH and osmolality, killing cells or skewing data. This usually forces researchers to leave the outer 36 wells empty, wasting over 37% of the plate. With the Nunc Edge plate, you can fill this surrounding moat with approximately 1.7 mL of sterile water or media. This fluid acts as an evaporation buffer, maintaining humidity and ensuring that the outer wells remain viable, allowing you to utilize the full 96-well capacity.

The wells feature the Nunclon Delta surface treatment, a proprietary modification that makes the polystyrene surface hydrophilic to promote maximum adhesion for a wide range of cell types. The flat bottom design ensures excellent optical properties for microscopy and plate reading. This plate is an essential tool for high-throughput cell-based assays where maximizing data points and maintaining uniformity across the entire plate are critical.
