The Corning 431684 5 L Erlenmeyer Flask is a large-volume culture vessel designed for the scale-up of suspension cells, such as CHO or HEK293 lines, as well as bacterial and yeast cultures. Molded from virgin polycarbonate (PC), this flask combines the optical clarity of glass with exceptional mechanical strength, making it shatterproof and safe for high-speed orbital shaking applications. Its 5-liter capacity allows researchers to produce large batches of protein or biomass in a single vessel, often serving as a simpler, cost-effective alternative to bioreactors for intermediate volumes.

A critical feature of this specific model is its baffled bottom. Unlike flat-bottom flasks, the base of this vessel features molded-in indentations (baffles) that disrupt the smooth flow of liquid during shaking. This intentional turbulence significantly increases the oxygen transfer rate (OTR) and prevents cell clumping, which is vital for maximizing growth yields in aerobic cultures.

The flask is topped with a large Vent Cap equipped with a broad 0.2 µm hydrophobic membrane. This membrane facilitates the high rates of gas exchange required by large-volume cultures while acting as a sterile barrier against bacteria and fungal spores. The flask is supplied sterile (gamma irradiated) and individually wrapped, offering a "use-and-dispose" solution that eliminates the time-consuming cleaning and autoclaving validation required for traditional glass Fernbach flasks.
