Pall Acro 50 Vent Filter – 0.2 µm, Hydrophobic PTFE, Stepped Hose Barb (MPN: 4250)

The Pall Acro 50 (MPN: 4250, now distributed under Cytiva) is an industry-standard 50 mm inline vent filter device engineered for high-efficiency bidirectional removal of bacteria, mold spores, and airborne particulates from gas and vacuum streams. Featuring a single-layer, inherently hydrophobic Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane supported inside a rugged polypropylene housing, this filter provides a large 19.6 cm² effective filtration area (EFA). The extreme hydrophobicity of the PTFE substrate prevents ambient humidity or aerosol mist from wetting out the membrane, maintaining optimal, high-velocity airflow and preventing premature pressure drops. This model is equipped with universal stepped hose barb connections that interface cleanly with flexible laboratory tubing ranging from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch inner diameter (ID).

Technical Performance and Design

  • Inherently Hydrophobic PTFE Membrane: The 0.2 µm sterilizing-grade PTFE matrix naturally repels aqueous solutions and moisture droplets, serving as an absolute physical barrier to block aerosol tracking and bacterial bypass under both wet and dry operating environments.

  • Broad Chemical Compatibility: Constructed entirely from premium fluoropolymer and polypropylene resins without internal adhesives or glues. This assembly resists degradation from aggressive chemical solvents, corrosive gases, and harsh laboratory acids/bases.

  • Universal Stepped Hose Barbs: Features molded-in 6.4 mm to 12.7 mm (1/4 in. to 1/2 in.) stepped hose barb inlet and outlet configurations, facilitating an immediate airtight friction fit with a broad spectrum of flexible elastomer tubing types.

  • Reusable & Autoclavable Housing: Precision-engineered to tolerate repetitive steam sterilization cycles up to 121°C (250°F) at 1 bar, allowing laboratories to repeatedly re-sanitize and reuse the device according to standard protocols.

Key Benefits & Applications

  • Bioreactor & Carboy Venting: Standardizes safe atmospheric pressure equalization in benchtop fermenters, bioreactors, cell culture carboys, and storage vessels while preventing external biological contamination.

  • Vacuum Line Bioisolation: Meets strict safety regulations for the protection of hospital and laboratory central vacuum systems, blocking hazardous biofluid aerosols or infectious moisture from fouling internal mechanical pumps.

  • Aggressive Solvent Filtration: Highly optimized for clarifying or purging particulate matter from harsh chromatography solvents, organic mobile phases, and photoresists that would dissolve nylon or cellulosics.

  • Sterile Gas Delivery: Frequently utilized inline to deliver particulate-free, sterile air or low-pressure carbon dioxide/nitrogen gas mixtures directly to cell culture hoods and live-cell observation incubators.
