Precision Systems Osmette XL AutoCal Osmometer

The Precision Systems Inc. (PSI) Model 5007 Osmette XL™ AutoCal Osmometer is a fully automated, high-throughput instrument designed to measure osmolality using the industry-standard freezing point depression method. Unlike manual single-sample units, the "XL" (Extra Load) designation indicates its capability to handle batch processing, making it a workhorse for clinical chemistry labs and industrial quality control centers that need to test high volumes of serum, urine, or culture media without constant operator supervision.

The defining feature of this system is its compatibility with a 24-position turntable carousel. Operators can load up to 24 separate 2.0 mL sample cups at once, press "Start," and walk away. The instrument mechanically indexes the carousel, lowers the freezing probe into each sample, initiates the freeze cycle (supercooling and crystallization), and digitally records the result before automatically wiping the probe and moving to the next position. This automation significantly reduces the "hands-on" time required per test and minimizes the technician-to-technician variability inherent in manual injection methods.

As the "AutoCal" name suggests, the instrument features built-in automatic calibration. Rather than requiring complex potentiometer adjustments, the system can be calibrated using standard 100 and 500 mOsm/kg standards with a simple keypad entry. The unit typically requires a sample volume of 0.25 mL (250 µL) and delivers results in approximately 90 seconds per sample, displaying the final value on a bright LED readout while optionally printing it to an integrated or external printer for hard-copy records.
