The R. Shadel "The Wedge" is a specialized gel electrophoresis casting tray designed to create gradient-thickness gels. Unlike standard flat gels, a "wedge" gel is thicker at the bottom than at the top, which creates a voltage gradient that helps resolve both small and large DNA fragments on a single gel. Improves resolution of bands. The wedge shape increases electrical resistance at the bottom, which slows down smaller fragments to prevent them from running off the gel while allowing larger fragments to continue separating. Primarily used for casting polyacrylamide or agarose gels with a tapered thickness.
