Synthware A272419 Modified Bump Trap is a specialized piece of glassware used with a rotary evaporator to prevent the contents of the evaporating flask from contaminating the solvent recovery flask and the vacuum system. A larger trap volume is necessary when evaporating larger quantities of solvent, especially if the sample tends to foam or vigorously bump under vacuum. The primary function is safety and purity. When a volatile solvent is heated under reduced pressure, it can sometimes rapidly boil and surge ("bump"), carrying the non-volatile product into the solvent collection system. The bump trap catches this surge, preventing contamination of the collected solvent and protecting the vacuum pump from chemical damage.
